Hard Bread, also known as Hard tack, has been a dietary staple of Newfoundlanders for decades. Hard Bread was developed from the ancient sea biscuit which formed the basis of meals on fishing vessels and cargo ships prior to the 1840s when baking onboard was impossible. Due to its long shelf life, hard bread was an ideal substitute for fresh bread. As one tale goes, a cook on a schooner was preparing a meal of hard bread and fish for the crew and was asked to break-up the bread, or ”bruise” the bread prior to it being soaked. Thus the term “Brewis”.

Purity Rocks!

My grandfather was from St Johns and once he became a US citizen for health reasons, he always had Hard Tack on thanksgiving and Christmas. My Mother carried the tradition when me and my siblings were young. And though they are both gone, my family continues the tradition of Hard Tack over the holidays here in Colorado. There is no company we trust more than Purity to ensure we have fresh Hard Bread and other wonderful newfoundland foods to celebrate the holidays with!

Exactly what I wanted

I have bought for a gift for my boss/ friend. She has never heard or seen before. For her entire life as lived in British Columbia. So I am hoping she may enjoy it.
As a kid remember my grandmother marking it.
